Welcome to the Online Teaching and Learning series of courses hosted by the Program Delivery department at Thompson Rivers University Open Learning.
These courses are based on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model of teaching and learning with each course focused on one of the defined ‘presences’ in the CoI.
As you can see, these courses are both free and openly licensed. That means that you can not only participate at no cost, but you are also permitted (encouraged!) to exercise your 5R rights with respect to open content.
You are free to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and/or redistribute these materials, provided you provide attribution and you share them under an open license.
New TRU Open Learning Faculty Members will be asked to complete these courses within six months of receiving their first student.
Online Teaching and Learning 101 is grounded in the CoI concept of 'cognitive presence,' which refers to the processes of constructing meaning through sustained communication in a learning context. Participants will learn strategies for encouraging students to take deeper approaches to their learning. Online Teaching and Learning 201 is grounded in the CoI concept of 'social presence,' which refers to the ability of learners and teachers to project themselves as real persons into a learning environment. Participants will create strategies to increase their own social presence and explore opportunities to encourage students to do the same. Online Teaching and Learning 301 is grounded in the CoI concept of 'teaching presence' which involves the design, facilitation, and direction of cognitive and social processes to realize learning outcomes. Participants will learn how to manage and promote social and cognitive processes to promote high quality learning experiences.
